There are many benefits to incorporating an infrared sauna into your workout routine. In a previous blog, we discussed some of the health benefits, and in part one of this multi-part series, we will give you an overview of everything you need to know about infrared saunas so you have a better idea of the benefits of an infrared sauna. What Is An Infrared Sauna?

Traditional saunas heat the air around you, which in turn will heat your body over time. Because of this, the saunas you may be used to become hot and you may not be able to sit in them for extended periods of time. On the other hand, infrared saunas use specific wavelengths of light that are designed to heat the body as opposed to just the air. Heating the body in this way targets cellular levels of the body which in turn will increase the release of toxins as you sweat. Since infrared saunas aren’t simply heating the air, they don’t become as hot as traditional saunas, meaning they are more tolerable for longer periods of time.

How Does Detox Work?

As the infrared lights heat your body, it encourages the release of toxins. This process is known as a “detox,” and it typically works in two different phases:

  • Phase One – During this initial phase, the infrared light begins heating your body, but your overall body temperature remains low and you will start to sweat. The infrared light will heat your tissue. Your body will compensate by increasing circulation, which will bring blood to the skin, giving your skin a flushed appearance. At this point, your body is releasing heat in an effort to cool you off, as opposed to releasing toxins.
  • Phase Two – Phase two begins within 10 to 30 minutes of sitting in the sauna. Your body reaches a point where it can no longer dispel heat, which causes your body temperature to rise. During this phase, you will also notice that you start to sweat more and your heart rate may increase. Blood will be increasingly delivered to the skin and you will start to release toxins.

In order to experience the full benefits of the infrared sauna, it’s a good idea to work up your tolerance to the heat. Keep in mind that the more often you use the sauna, the longer it will take you to reach phase two.

Why Use An Infrared Sauna

In addition to the numerous health benefits, there are many advantages to using an infrared sauna over a traditional sauna. As we mentioned above, traditional saunas are designed to heat the room, whereas infrared saunas heat your body. Because of this, the temperature of an infrared sauna is much cooler, allowing you to use it for longer periods of time.

Infrared light is also able to penetrate underneath the top layers of your skin. Some research even shows that the light waves can reach 3.5 to four centimeters below the surface! This allows for the use of lower temperatures.

Your body comes equipped with detoxification organs which will detox your body naturally. By using a infrared sauna, you give these organs a much-needed break. Not to mention, infrared light provides your tissues with an effective cleanse. Sitting in a sauna creates an artificial fever of sorts that will kill unwanted bacteria. It will also help release toxins, such as heavy metals that may reside in your body.
